Installation of Gibraltar Print

ImageThe installation of Gibraltar Firewall is very easy. If you are not running Gibraltar with one of our Security Appliances, you have to use your own hardware. A standard PC with at least two network interfaces is sufficient.

Gibraltar is both operating system and firewall application, so you don´t have to install any other operating system onto your firewall hardware. You will find all hardware requirements here.

Seven steps to Gibraltar Firewall:

  • Download Gibraltar Software: The Gibraltar Software is available for free on several mirror servers around the world. You have to download Gibraltar as an ISO image file. Using this file and a standard CD recorder, you can create a bootable CD ROM with Gibraltar Software.
  • Burn a Gibraltar CD ROM: Burn the ISO image file on a CD ROM. You will receive a bootable Gibraltar CD ROM as a result.
  • Boot your hardware from CD ROM: Booting your hardware with the Gibraltar CD ROM will run Gibraltar. Perhaps you have to change the boot order in your BIOS settings. You are able to track the progress of the boot sequence on your monitor.
  • Cabling of your hardware: The hardware you are using needs at least two network interfaces. Connect one of the cards with your internal network and one of the cards with your Internet router (see drawing)
  • Configuration with Web interface: Depending on what hardware you are using, Gibraltar assignes an IP address to each network interface automatically. The first adapter will receive the IP address 10.0.0.1, the second 10.0.1.1, the third 10.0.2.1 and so on. After that you are able to access the Web based configuration tool of Gibraltar using any Web browser. Therefore you have to adjust the IP address of your administration PC to the IP address of the Gibraltar interfaces (eg. 10.0.0.10 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0). Afterwards enter the address of the firewall into your browser: https://10.0.X.X
  • Log in to the Web interface: Log in to the Web interface with user root. There is no password necessary at first login, but you have to assign one immediatly after login.
  • Upload license file: For using the Web interface it is necessary to upload a valid license file

Detailed instructions installing and configuring a Gibraltar firewall you will find in the official user manual, which can be downloaded on this Web site. There you will also find many practicable methods and scenarios for configuring Gibraltar.
