Gibraltar is based on the Linux distribution Debian. Therefore Gibraltar runs on each hardware, which is compatible with Debian. Depending on the used features and on the size of the network you want to protect, we recommend the following basic configuration:
Firewall
Pentium PC, at least 300MHz 128MB RAM bootable CD-ROM drive 1.44" floppy disk drive 2 x network interface cards 10/100/1000
Firewall and proxy server functions
Pentium PC, at least 600MHz 256MB RAM bootable CD-ROM 32 or faster hard disk 10GB or bigger for log files and proxy cache 1.44" floppy disk drive or USB adapter alternatively for saving the configuration 2 x network interface cards 10/100/1000
Firewall with VPN functions
Depending on the number of tunnels and the encoding intensity a respectively higher-performanced computer should be used.
Network interface card
In principle every PCI Plug'n Play network interface card should work with Gibraltar. Best results were achieved using one of the following chipsets:
- NE2000 compatible
- 3COM
- Intel
- Realtek
Modem
Any USB or serial analog modem or ISDN modem.
ADSL
ADSL PPTP or ADSL PPPoE
