Bandwidth management, Traffic Shaping, QoS Print

Time-critical applications, which assume a certain amount of minimum bandwidth, are increasing and get more and more important. In the majority of cases, these are stateful (TCP) network protocols like Internet telephony (VoIP), video conference or certain protocols for remote access (mobile users and application servers and remote administration).

All these applications need a continuous available minimum bandwidth for proper operation. A sudden drop of available bandwidth can lead to a significant interference or even total termination of important connections.

Thus Gibraltar is able to prioritise and to restrict all outgoing data traffic (Traffic shaping). This makes it possible to define minimum bandwidth requirements for certain protocols or services (e.g. ICA) and to downgrade other non-critical services (e.g. email).
By using this feature it is also possible to equally share any network connection for different users.

For technical reasons it is only possible to regulate outgoing traffic, Gibraltar bandwidth management is best used in shaping the traffic of own network sites.

Unlike central traffic shaping solutions, Gibraltar is also able to regulate stateless (UDP) network protocols. Thus an overload of network bandwidth through internal traffic is impossible.
