Gibraltar offers an effective protection against viruses and other potential threats for the following services:
- Email traffic using SMTP and POP3
- Web downloads and Webmail using HTTP
- Data transfers using FTP
Gibraltar includes the Antivirus Engine of Kaspersky, one of the leading providers of Antivirus Software. The Antivirus Engine of Kaspersky Labs is repeatedly awarded and offers the fastest update cycle in industry sector (see www.av-test.org)
Kaspersky checks for all known viruses as well as for typical patterns of potential threats (heuristic analysis), and is thus able to identify also by then unknown viruses. Of course, the Antivirus Engine is also able to scan all common archiving and compression formats.
Email inspection
Gibraltar checks all incoming and outgoing Emails (SMTP and POP3) against viruses and Spam, before they are forwarded to the next mail server or loaded into the mail client of the user. If any harmful attachment or virus is detected, the corresponding email will alternatively be deleted, rejected, marked or sent into quarantine. Gibraltar is able to check the email traffic of an arbitrary amount of mailboxes and domains.
Web inspection
If you are using Gibraltar as an http proxy server, all incoming web traffic can be scanned against viruses. This is an important feature, because many users are using web based email clients instead of conventional email clients. As a consequence, email attachments are no longer being transferred using separate mail protocols like SMTP or POP3 and passing secure mail filters, but they are directly downloaded using HTTP. For this reason, it is indispensable to check also the HTTP stream (Web downloads) against viruses.
Inspection of file transfers
Besides the protection of email and web traffic, Gibraltar is also able to protect the incoming and outgoing FTP traffic against viruses. Basically, Gibraltar operates two separate FTP proxy servers (incoming and outgoing), which also make sure, that it is not possible to attack an internal FTP server directly from the Internet.
Continuous update of Antivirus signatures
Gibraltar updates Antivirus signatures (over 150.000, as of 04/2006) hourly and is permanently up-to-date for this reason. Kaspersky Labs releases a new Antivirus signature on an average of 4 hours from the first appearance of a virus. This is record time and no other producer of Antivirus software is able to react during this short period of time (www.av-test.org)
Fast and frequent updates ensure, that shortly after an virus outbreak, every Gibraltar Security Gateway world wide is up-to-date and perfectly protected against the new virus. |
