Anonymisation Gateway Print

Regarding the current legal situation in Europe and the United States, Internet providers and server administrators are obliged to record usage data of network services. These files reveal a lot of internal facts about companies like sensitive customer and supplier relationships. In addition to this, user behaviour can be tracked from the outside. This means, that it is possible to track down all visited web sites and exchanged e-mails of any user in your internal network.

Gibraltar enables the administrator to make selected network traffic anonymous. In this case, it is not possible for Internet providers and target servers to trace back connections to your network.

To assure anonymity, Gibraltar uses three different techniques:

JAP

Gibraltar includes the server version of JAP, an often praised software of the Technical University of Dresden. JAP has been developed especially to make http traffic anonymous. For this reason, the whole web traffic is redirected over so called mixes (encrypted intermediaries) of independent providers. Simultaneously, the users web traffic is mixed up with the web traffic of other users, so it is not possible for anyone to trace back any web request to the original user.

Users surfing behind a Gibraltar Firewall are therefore safe from tracing. JAP can be operated transparently - so no client configuration is necessary.

Tor

TOR is an anonymisation software supported by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. TOR uses a so called Onion Routing Protocol. With it, any network connections can be made anonymous. Very similar to JAP, the network traffic is redirected over several relay hosts, which are chosen dynamically and are changed periodically. Each client application (e.g. Web browser, FTP client, Chat client) is able to use TOR as a SOCKS proxy and thus make its traffic anonymous.

Freenet

Freenet builds some kind of overlay network over the Internet. In Freenet it is possible to post information anonymous and safe from censorship. All data in Freenet is distributed in a way, which makes it impossible to trace back both uploads and downloads. Thus, Freenet offers an anonymous distributed file system which purpose is freedom of opinion. From the users point of view, Gibraltar offers a http portal for accessing Freenet with any available web browser.
